Makkah

According to the Qur'an Ibrahim finally found Isma'il and Hagar.
Isma'il and Ibrahim together built a square area about as high as a man with no roof. To lay the top layers Ibrahim stood on a large rock the Maqam Ibrahim . The building became known as the Ka'ba (or cube). People have worshipped on the site of the Ka'ba for 4000 years.

It is considered to be the first building where God was worshipped. All Muslims pray in the direction of the Ka'ba wherever they are in the world.

Makkah was also an important site in the life of Muhammad. Although he lived there, at first his teachings where not accepted. He was driven to nearby Madinah where he gathered loyal followers around him.

In 630 AD he marched on Makkah with 10000 men. He rode around the Ka'ba 7 times, touched the Black stone and then called everyone to prayer. From this point on Makkah has been a Muslim city.
