Ibrahim (or Abraham) was put to the test by God. He had sworn to sacrifice everything in his life for God. Ibrahim lived with his wife Sarah and his second wife Hagar with whom he had his only son, Isma'il. God asked him to sacrifice his only son as a sign of his loyalty. Because Ibrahim was a holy and devout man he was prepared to do this. He took his son and set off for Mina to perform the sacrifice. On the way to Mina Ibrahim was met by the Devil disguised as a man. He tempted Ibrahim and tried to convince him that God did not want him to do this. Each time Ibrahim resisted the Devil, he picked up stones and threw them at him to make him leave. Finally Ibrahim prepared to kill his son Isma'il, but God stopped him before he did it. God was pleased with Ibrahim because he had shown that he was prepared to sacrifice his son. As a reward his first wife Sarah gave birth to Isaac. |
