The 5 K’s

Links to previous lesson: Students previously brainstormed clubs and groups. They used this information to design their own club, highlighting themes of belonging, initiation and symbolism.

Learning Objectives

Pupils ...

·                Learn about the names and significance of each of the 5K’s of Sikhism

·                Use research and discussion skills to investigate the 5K’s

·                Reflect on how the 5 Ks and the beliefs behind them may affect a Sikh in their daily lives

 

 

Teaching approach and activities

 

Starter:

·                State objectives

·                Refer back to clubs, belonging and symbolism

·                Display Sikh doll ask pupils to point out the significant elements (‘he’s got a hat on’, ‘he’s wearing a sword’ etc.)

·                Introduce the main activity

Main Activities:

·                Class is broken up into 5 groups

·                Each group is going to gather information about one of the 5 Ks they will then share this information with another group.

·                The gathering stage will include 1. Writing a description of the artefact 2. Asking 3 questions to discover what the artefact is and what it represents 3. Guessing the answers to the questions 4. Being provided with information (books) to research the answers.

·                Advanced work for early finishers; describe the K well enough for the others to draw

·                Once pupils have gathered the information the groups are changed. The ‘experts’ feedback to their new group the information that they have obtained and each group fills in a sheet explaining each of the 5 Ks.

·                Chanting names game to remember the names of the 5 Ks

 

Plenary:

·                Once information has been gathered games are played using the 5 K cards emphasis on each member of the group being able to take part. Merits used as reward.

·                Discuss objectives and whether they have been met.

 

Outcomes and assessment

 

Most pupils will…                               (level 4)

·                Be able to name each of the 5 Ks

·                Be able to describe each of the 5K’s

·                Be able to explain the significance of each of the 5K’s

·                Have produced individual explanations of each of the 5 Ks  including a description or drawing.

 

Some pupils will not have made as much progress and will…                              (level 3)

·                Be able to identify the 5K’s as Sikh artefacts

·                Be able to explain some of the importance of the 5K’s for Sikhs

 

Some pupils will have made more progress and will…                      (level 5+)

·                Be able to explain how each of the 5K’s affects the life of a Sikh

·                Be able to Reflect on their own beliefs as a response to beliefs expressed in the 5K’s (eg the eternity of God shown by the Kara)

 

Assessment is based on the competition at the end, the completed worksheet and the ‘I learnt today...’ section at the back of their books.
