Links to previous lesson: Students have been discussing and exploring the affect of Science on Religious belief. They have written a creative piece of writing, ‘A day in the life of a Stone age Tribe.’

Learning Objectives

Pupils ...

·                Learn about the beliefs of the Aztecs about the Sun

·                Learn about the rituals the Aztecs used in order to get the sun to come up each morning

·                Consider the affect scientific knowledge (or lack of it) has on religious belief

·                Consider how religion today attempts to answer questions which Science cannot answer (Ultimate questions)

 

 

Teaching approach and activities

 

Starter:

·                State objectives

·                Recap activity from previous lesson ‘How does the sun rise each morning’

·                Discussion ‘Who were the Aztecs?’ Based on homework from previous lesson.

Main Activities:

·                Using worksheet discuss the focusing questions. Ask pupils to be ready to give answers to these questions at any time

·                In turn read through the sheet. (possible ‘pass it on’ reading game)

·                Teacher explanation where appropriate

·                Discuss the focusing questions

·                Talk through tasks

·                Pupils work on tasks

Plenary:

·                With closed books answer  focusing questions in group session.

·                Set Homework

·                Complete ‘I learnt today…’

 

 

Outcomes and assessment

 

Most pupils will…                               (level 5)

·                Be able to describe the rituals and beliefs of the Aztecs towrads the sun god

·                Be able to identify the affect of scientific knowledge on religious belief

·                Be able to identify at least one example of an ultimate question (although at this point they may no recognise the term ‘ultimate question’)

Some pupils will not have made as much progress and will...                               (level 3+4)

·                Know that the Aztecs killed people because they thought the sun was a God

·                Understand that it was fear and ignorance that led to this behaviour.

·                Recognise that religion today tries to overcome fear and ignorance.

·                Reflect in greater depth on the contribution of religion as a method of dealing with ultimate questions

·                Consider their own response to ultimate questions.
