About the unit

 

In this unit pupils learnt about the effects of Religion in the world today. They also learn basic facts about the 6 major world religions and are given an opportunity to demonstrate their learning early on in the course. This

 

Where the unit fits in

This is an introduction unit to all the work pupils will cover in Key Stage 3 and 4.

 

 

 

 

 

Expectations

 

At the end of this unit

 

all pupils will: identify the key elements of religion; indicate some of the ways that religion will affect the lives of believers; identify the areas of the world which are mainly Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jewish; be able to name some of the key elements of the world religions.

 

most pupils will: be able to name most of the elements of the world religions; identify and understand the key terms relating to the unit.

 

some pupils will have progressed further and will: be able to name all of the elements of the world religions; be able to identify the affect of religion in the world today by referring to Newspapers  etc.

Through the activities in this unit pupils will be able to understand, use and spell correctly words relating to the study of:

·                Religion, deity, Synagogue, Mosque, Mandir, Gurdwara, Church, Vedas, Bible, Tenak, Brahma, Allah, Yahweh, Sikh, Hindu, Jew, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist

 

Speaking and Listening—through the activities pupils could:

·                Answer questions using relevant evidence or reasons

·                Present information in  small groups

 

Writing—through the activities pupils could:

Plan and develop ideas and lines of thinking in continuous text

Prior Learning

 

It is helpful is pupils have:

·       Learnt some basic facts about religion from Key Stage 1 and 2

1. What is Religion?

·  That Religion is all around us

·  That Religion has an affect on believers and others

·  Brainstorm : ‘What do we think of when we hear the word ‘Religion‘?’

·  Small group work ‘What do we expect from RE?’

·  Introduce Street Scene Picture Give an opportunity To view then talk about what pupils see

·  Teacher lead  pointing out significance of each part

·  Identify the different religions represented

·  Can show awareness of the affects of belief on individuals

·  Possible homework ‘In the picture I can see…’

2. Religious Tables

·  That there are 6 major world religions

·  That they have key elements (Holy book, place of worship etc.)

·  Teacher lead discussion, trying to draw out previous knowledge of the world religions. E.g. ‘Who can name a major world religion?’

·  Identify the important elements of each, followers, founder, holy book.

·  Introduce the table, talk through it.

·  Name the 6 major world religions

·  Identify key elements of each religion

·  Recognise similarities

·  Homework learn the table

3. Statements and Symbols

·  Building from lesson 2 knowing the key elements

·  How a religion’s symbol reflects their belief

·  Quick test on last week’s homework 10 questions

·  Introduce the symbols for each religion in more detail

·  Talk through the simple phrase that goes with each symbol

·  Each students gets a sheet with the symbol and a missing words phrase to complete

·  Identify which symbol represents each religion

·  Can explain the meaning of the symbol

·  Can give basic details about the specific religion they are covering

·  Homework learn the table for 2nd test

·  Statements and symbols sheet

4. Religions World Maps

·  How Religions are spread throughout the world

·  Why Christianity and Islam spread the way they did

·  Quick test on last week’s homework 10 questions

·  Hand out blank world maps use large map as a guide, question and answer session. ‘Which Religion do you think is number 1?’ etc

·  Students colour in map the appropriate colours

·  Understand the origins of each religion and the spread of that religion

·  Understand the mix of religious groups throughout the world

·

5. Tests and Display Work

·  To demonstrate prior knowledge under test condition

·  Short test

·  Finish previous work

·  Create display work based on previous lessons

·  Demonstrate a clear understanding of the basic facts about each of the world religions studied

·  This testing is designed to give an early indication of ability in Religious Studies enabling the teacher to develop strategies for further teaching
