How is the Bible structured?

  • The Protestant Bible is divided into 66 books, with 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.
  • It was written by approximately 40 authors, over perhaps a period of 1,600 years.
  • All books in the Old Testament were written before Jesus was born and the ones in the New Testament were produced after he was born.
  • For the Old Testament books can be divided into the classifications of history, poetry and prophecy.
  • The historical books record the Jewish people's history from creation up to approximately 600 B.C.
  • The first five books of the Bible are also know as the Pentatech, or also as the Books of Moses.
  • After the book of Esther, Job to Solomon are more geered to be devotional and for instruction.
  • From Isaiah to Malachi, the next 16 books are books of prophecy.
  • In the Bible, there are 4 major propehts: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel. Also, there are 12 minor prophets: Hosea-Malachi.
  • For the New Testament there are gospels, which are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John (gospel means "good news").
  • Acts is a history book for the early church, for its first 30 years approximately.
  • Romans to Jude are epistsles, which means letters.
  • Finally is the Book of Revlation, which is a propehcy book.
