What do Seventh-day Adventists believe?

  • Seventh-day Adventists are a large and fast-growing Protestant group, that as of 2023 had about 25 million members.
  • They hold to distinct beliefs, such as the seventh-day Sabbath, a literal heavenly sanctuary (not just on earth) and health guidelines, such as reducing/eliminating the use of meat and also to avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • The church was formed in the years following the "Great Dissapointment" of 1844, when the Millerite movement (William Miller) had taught about Jesus' soon return by around that year.
  • There were various pivotal founders including Ellen White, who Adventists believe had visions from God, her husband James and also (Captain) Joseph Bates.
  • Ellen White wrote numerous books, that have been widely translated.
  • There are various accusations levelled against the church, such as that Ellen White was a plagiarist, however, she was never convicted during or after her lifetime for being so as the rules of literary utilisation were different during her lifetime and in the book the Great Controversy she states that she has utilised other writers in her text for historical facts.
