What is the Book of Judges about?
- In Jewish tradition the prophet Samuel is listed as the author, who was the last of the judges mentioned.
- The book begins after Joshua's death, in the early 14th century B.C. and continues until the corwing of Saul by Samuel.
- Judges is the sequel to Joshua.
- The contents may not be chronological and the last chapters of it give a moral overview of the time period.
- During the time period there was national turmoil politically and religiously.
- The tribes fought between themselves, nearly destroying Manasseh and Benjamin.
- There is a pattern of behaviour where the people were rebellious through idolatry/disbelief, God gave judgement via foreign peoples, God gave a deliverer (or judge) and after repenting, the people fell back into sin.
- The Book of Judges teaches that unrepentent sin will not go unpunished
