What is a king and what is a judge in the Old Testament?

  • There are various judges and kings mentioned in the Old Testament.
  • Judges were a leader brought to prominence by God to meet a need or deal with a crisis - afterwards they usual went back to their previous activity.
  • A king ruled during their lifetime and also passed down the role to their descendents.
  • Judges did not form a government.
  • Kings would make a goverment to deal with bureaucracy.
  • Samuel was the last judge mentioned and Moses acted as Israel's first, among differing roles including being a spiritual leader.
  • Gideon refused to be a king, stating that only God should be.
